Rare Films in Duluth

There will be a rare chance to see 35mm prints of both Wildrose and Northern Lights projected on the big screen at the upcoming Duluth Superior Film Festival. In the case of Northern Lights, a new 35mm print made by the Academy Film Archives as part of the recent restoration and preservation of the film. Wild Rose plays on June 1 and Northern Lights on June 2 at Zinema in Duluth. For info and tickets, go to the fest website:

It’s here. It’s finally here. Film for a Short Attention Span is this Saturday, April 14 at StageNorth. At 7:30 p.m. (or a little earlier if we get totally amped and can’t wait any more) we’ll start playing one short film after another until we can’t frickin’ stand it any more. And it’s going to be awesome. We’ve got happy ones and sad ones and ones that don’t make too terribly much sense, but they’re still super cool any way. Best of all the whole shootin’ match is FREE. You heard me: FREE! So stop on down, grab a beer and enjoy. Who knows, there may even be signature short drinks….

The Wall- Friday, March 30 @ 7:30 p.m.

Has your life been too normal lately? Has everything around you been making far too much sense? We have the solution to your problem. Come join us for a screening of Pink Floyd’s classic film The Wall. It’s weird. Super-weird. And awesome at the same time. If you’ve never seen it check out the trailer below to get a vague inkling of what I’m talking about. If you have seen it…well, you know what I’m talking about.

The official description of the movie reads: “The Wall is a 1982 British live-action/animated musical film directed by Alan Parker based on the 1979 Pink Floyd album of the same name. The screenplay was written by Pink Floyd vocalist and bassist Roger Waters. The film is highly metaphorical and is rich in symbolic imagery and sound. It features very little dialogue and is mainly driven by the music of Pink Floyd.”

That’s all accurate, but it doesn’t even begin to describe the film. It’s layered, it’s dark, it’s nuanced. Somehow, the words chaotic and melancholy both come to mind. But above all its weird. And I mean that in the absolute best sense. I don’t really know what else to say about this film, it sort of defies description. Just come and see it, okay? Saturday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m. at StageNorth. Admission is $7 for the general public, $6 for students and Society Members, and Free for Northland College Students.

All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall.

Big Night a huge success.

Despite the fact that Louis Prima never showed, the Bay Area Film Society’s fundraiser, The Big Night, was a huge success. How much money was raised? A bunch. I don’t really know. Maybe no one does…Okay, hopefully our accountant knows, but that’s not really the point here. The point is this: it was a blast. Anywhere you looked during the evening someone was laughing. It was a great movie, a fantastic meal thanks to the good people at the Good Thyme, and amazing company. With more than 70 attendees, we had a pretty packed house, and great people in every seat. Thanks everyone for supporting BAFS and we look forward to seeing you at Film for a Short Attention Span on Saturday, April 14 @7:30 p.m. It’ FREE!

UPDATE: Well, folks the last chance has past. The Bight Night is officially sold out. But you can still join us for just the film at 5:30 p.m. at StageNorth. See you all there!

Okay all you procrastinators, this is it. It’s time to get serious. It’s your last chance to get your tickets for the Big Night. We only have a handful left. And I mean it this time. Mostly because if you wait any longer you’ll actually miss the event. And then I’m not really sure why you’d want to buy a ticket any more…except that the proceeds from this event benefit the Bay Area Film Society and make it possible for us to keep bringing great films to Washburn. Anyway, down to business. Get your tickets, get your suit pressed and start building up an appetite.

The Big Night is this Saturday, March 10. It’ll kick off with appetizers at 5:00 p.m., a screening of Big Night starring Tony Shaloub, Marc Anthony, and Stanley Tucci at 5:30 p.m. (if you haven’t seen it yet, watch the trailer below), and a private dinner at the Good Thyme following the film. I don’t want to give away too much, but the menu is going to be fantastic. Call (715) 373-5565 to reserve your tickets before they’re gone. $25 per person or $45 per couple. (hint: This might be a good date, fellas. It’s at least going to be better than that time you took her ice fishing. Seriously man, ice fishing? Pull it together.)

Practice of the Wild Tonight!

First off, I’d like to official welcome winter back to Wisconsin. Thanks for stopping in old friend, better late than never. Okay. Second, we’ve got an amazing film for you tonight: The Practice of the Wild, a film profile of poet, Pulitzer Prize winner and activist Gary Snyder featuring friend and fellow writer Jim Harrison. If you don’t know Snyder and Harrison do your self a favor and spend some time this morning at the old google-box looking them up. We’re talking about some serious heavy hitters in the field of American writers. Let me get you started right here: Gary Snyder & Jim Harrison.

And check out our previous posts for the official trailer. I can’t wait. So trim up your beat goatee, shovel out the car, and meet us at StageNorth for a great film (and maybe a glass of wine). The Film starts at 7:30 and Charly Ray, one of the sponsors of tonight’s film will lead a discussion on community, land, conservation, and our home land after the screening.

Practice of the Wild-Thursday, March 1 7:30 p.m.

Come celebrate the life and times of Gary Snyder this Thursday at Stage North with a showing of “Practice of the Wild – A conversation with Gary Snyder and Jim Harrison.” Gary is arguably the most influential poet on the modern environmental movement and a major figure in American poetry, recognized with the Pulitzer Prize for his masterpiece “Turtle Island” in 1977. And Jim Harrison is no slouch either!

Gary has articulated timeless ideas about the relation between people and place which continue to resonate today. Before local was cool, he was digging in and “re-inhabiting” the Sierra Nevada in California. Before watershed based land management was mainstream, he was working (for decades!) on “Mountains and Rivers Without End” articulating a watershed philosophy. Invariably, I find leaders in the conservation community have been touched by Gary’s work.

My friend Roy Settgas and I are sponsoring this movie because Gary has influenced us both personally over the years and this is our way of sharing his work with our friends in our region. Please join me for the movie and a conversation afterwards about community, land, conservation, and our home land.

Project Nim-TONIGHT!

Join us tonight at StageNorth for Project Nim (poster above). This film looks pretty intriguing. It chronicles the story of Nim, a chimpanzee that researchers separated from its mother at birth and raised like a human child. Project Nim explores the incredible story of inter-species communication, but also the ultimate failure of the experiment (in the trailer one interviewee mentions 37 stitches…). Needless to say, I think it gets a little weird, but the film looks really well done. The screening will begin at 7:30 pm. See you there.

This is the official trailer for our next film: Project Nim. It’s the story of a chimpanzee that was taken from its mother and raised as a human child during the 1970′s. The concept was a little whacky to say the least, even for the ’70′s, but the film is an award winning look at a truly compelling story. We’ll be showing it at StageNorth on February 22 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Don’t miss it.
